If only my local milk bar had ACTUAL milkshakes - just like the old days! Well Monash Mammas, you are in luck. Willow Ave General Store is your friendly neighbourhood milk bar with the addition of toasties, milkshakes, bagels and MORE.
Well who doesn’t just love a hotdog? This Mamma certainly does, and so do her boys. Mamma has just stumbled across a hotdog van with permanent residency in The Basin and we are pretty happy about it.
Taking up residency on Mountain Hwy, it’s the new coffee van on the block and we love it.

The writing is on the wall - Love Thy Coffee! Mamma has found the right spot! Stranger Coffeehouse and Kitchen is a brand new cafe to open its doors on Whitehorse Road in Balwyn. This isn’t your classic new cafe though - this is a fully restored 100 year old building and it has a new lease on life.

This cafe is an absolute Glen Waverley classic! It’s been here for as long as anyone can remember. It’s THE cafe that’s stood the test of time and become part of the fabric of the area. No matter how much Glen Waverley has grown and changed, Mocha Jo’s has always been that go-to spot everyone LOVES!
Nestled in a residential pocket of Ringwood, Common Room is your go-to haven for a brekkie or lunch fix that hits all the right notes. There is more than just a garden on top of Burwood Brickworks shopping centre. Rombe Rooftop Restaurant (and wedding venue!) is absolutely beautiful. It has farmhouse vibes, filled with lovely natural light and has amazing views of the Dandenong Ranges.
It’s Milki as in milk bar. It is Miller as in John James Miller - the first Knox shire president. And together is it a funky cafe found at the Alchester shops in Boronia.

Black Vice Cafe is hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Hurstbridge! It has super high ceilings and a rustic charm, with ample space for prams, high chairs and up to groups of 12.
Mamma loves it when you can have a meal AND an experience at the same time. That is what you get at Wagyu Fun at Burwood One Shopping Centre. This cool space is both a Japanese and Korean restaurant in one.
The Stamford Park Homestead used to be the ‘country home’ of the Row family back in the 1880s and now, after years of tender loving care, it is back to its best and open for all of us to enjoy.

Every now and then a cafe will open its doors and hit the nail on the head for catering for families and young families. The CriBB Cafe in Lilydale has done that. A warm, welcoming space with plenty of room for kids to be themselves in a safe area, all while Mamma can sit and enjoy her coffee.

If you’re in Hawthorn and looking for a yummy feed, in a charming, cozy atmosphere - don’t look past Porgies. It’s homely and warm AND deceivingly spacious inside, with multiple rooms, ample space for high chairs and prams and a massive outdoor area.

The Drop In Cafe is an eclectic dream. This little tucked away cafe is filled to the brim with trinkets and treasures, you may get a little distracted. There are tea sets, doll houses, lamps and every nick-nack under the sun. Even the cups and plates feel like you are enjoying a home cooked meal at Nanna’s.
Cafe Brontos is as family friendly as it comes and it is the Flintstone themed! You’ll spot menu items named after your favourite Fred, Wilma and even Bam Bam. The cafe is super spacious and welcoming to all.
Mamma drools as she walks into this bakery, and always leaves with a very full belly.

Oh we are so so so lucky to have not one, but TWO Babajai’s in the east! The food here is exceptional. Traditional flavours from Max’s homeland fill the air at this new Warburton venue - you’ll quickly fall in love with food from Kerala, South India.
There is a lot to love about your local pub! Especially when she is a grand old lady just like the Yarra Valley Grand Hotel.
Mamma is a huge fan of this amazing group of women who run this magical space in Croydon. True Fairies magical museum and fantasy café, provide high tea, host private parties, cater for tour and school groups, sell magical products, offer special events and school holiday programs.

YOMG Rowville, at Stud Park, is what we like to think of as a quick win. Somewhere Mamma KNOWS the kids will find something on the menu to satisfy a hunger, there is heaps of room to relax while we wait for the meal AND if they play all their cards right, there is dessert waiting around the corner.
With a number of playgrounds around the Officer area, Blondie’s Kafe is the perfect spot for Mamma to stop by for a coffee or even grab one on the go from the coffee window. But wait … there’s more - our favourite this is the small toddler play area outside and they provide colouring for the kids to enjoy.
Churchill Cafe is set amongst the lovely little strip of shops in Mont Albert, and not only is the food here delicious, it is so pretty.

El Jannah has just popped up in the East and Mamma is pretty excited. Mamma must agree, their charcoal chicken is legendary.
Nancy is the perfect complement to the homewares outlet. With airy ceilings and gorgeous decor - including the ceramic light fixtures above the coffee counter - the cafe is pretty darn perfect.

We LOVE finding sweet treats that are a little more special than usual. Kōri Ice Cream on Glenferrie Road in Hawthorn fits this one to a tee! The ice cream here is Japanese inspired but imagined and created right here in Melbourne.
If your family loves a sweet treat served in a cone, or even a quick afternoon treat in the warmer months, this dessert bar is something else! Meno Zero know their desserts and they never ever disappoint. The freezers are full of gelato and in some pretty amazing flavours.

Where do all the Mitchamites head for bunch on the weekend? Dark Horse on the Brit … of course! This family friendly dining spot is always pumping out great food and full of happy patrons.

The brains behind the brews is Evan - local barista turned coffee roaster. Now he as stepped out from behind the machine at Locavore and now into his very own roastery, at the back of the newly renovated studio. Here is where all the coffee magic happens in this beautiful space. You can purchase beans, sample the filtered coffee or just chat all things espresso.
Locavore has become an absolute staple in the Lilydale Main Street and they have just upped the game with a brilliant new renovation with the addition of the providore and the resident coffee king - Proximal - opening their very own roastry at the back.

Mamma often gets asked - where is a great winery in the Yarra Valley that I can take the kids. Right here - Punt Road Wines! This beautiful cellar door is totally family friendly and an incredible spot to sample amazing cool-climate wines.
Talk about perfect. The Healesville Hotel has had a refresh and Mamma’s favourite addition… the family friendly backyard. Plop yourself down at one of the many outdoor picnic tables under the market umbrellas and the canopy of elm trees and may yourself at home.
Scusa Mi! Italiano is the perfect spot for a family meal. The restaurant is huge - yep, the entire extended family could join you for a special occasion if you wish - and it has some of the most amazing Italian flavours.
The Carriage Cafe is exactly what the name suggests - a cafe in a 100 year old carriage situated alongside the Warburton rail trail, paying great respect to the history of the area. Choose your seat in the dining carriage or sit on the balcony and watch the trail buzz on by.

Arthurs Creek Coffee Co is an Australian Roastery who have recently opened a store in Warrandyte and Mamma must say the coffee is great.
Banh mi shop by day, wine bar by night. How cool is that?! The rolls here are enormous and they are bursting with fillings. PLUS the protein choices are absolutely unreal.
Mamma just loves the Dandenongs and LOVES going to Kallista Deli and Cafe. This gorgeous little cafe set in the cutest of towns offers up a great selection of food (sourced freshly from local produce and local suppliers). You can sit indoors and enjoy the peace and quiet- there is even a little kids corner with colouring in, books and puzzles.
You will remember this face from Main Street Croydon and NOW he has added deli style sandwiches and toasties to the mix. Dean is passionate about food and can not wait to bring beautifully fresh sandwich delights to the Maroondah hood.
In need of a lovely relaxed atmosphere and some good coffee? The Boulevard Food store is just the place. The space has lovely natural light flowing through their big windows, plenty of food store and homeware items to browse through, and a great modern Australian menu.

Mamma has never had an ice cream like the ones you will find at Kariton Sorbetes. This frozen treat shop - artisanal gelato if you please - is a real mix of influences and most significantly Filipino flavours.
Mamma might KNOW the east but it is the Storehouse who KNOWS all there is to know about coffee. After establishing themselves as cafe masters in Mt Evelyn, the Storehouse continues to spread their wings and have a dedicated Roastery and espresso bar further up into the ranges, in Olinda.
Mamma must say that The Big Watermelon is a big help on the finances. All the produce is locally grown and as fresh as it gets. Along side the fruit and veg there are packaged nuts, dried fruit, tinned goods, milk, breads, yoghurt, fruit and veg salads and much more.
We may have just found the best spot for brunch. Mae in Malvern East is the sweetest new cafe on the block, blushing in baby doll pink and the food is perfection!
This Mamma knows that you need to have a great gift shop, florist and cafe in your hood. The Posie Project ticks all THREE of those boxes. Coffee, flowers, homewares and amazing service.
Tucked away in a little group of shops, Hamlet is a beautiful white building with a huge outdoor courtyard, as well as outdoor seating on the side of the building and out the front.

The Nooj Pub is famous. In a tiny town, mid way from Yarra Junction to Mt Baw Baw, this place is the heart of it all and been here for nearly 100 years. All weekend the kitchen churns out hearty aussie pub meals served with a huge chunk of country hospitality.
Pretty and pink, Pretzel oozes pop culture vibes and Mamma loved the simplicity of their store. With all Pretzels made in store by an artesian pretzel baker, topped with the fun and fresh ingredients, you will be delighted in all the sweet and savoury options.
The incredible flavours are now being served in this second store and Mamma is THRILLED. We popped in to fine all of our favourites rosewater, choc mint and baclava. As well as some new front runners - the berry and white choc is delicious. This is ice cream at its finest and in Croydon.
Did someone say bagels? Did the mention gourmet sandwiches? Do we get a hint of amazing coffee? Yes, yes and YES. All can be found in this super cool cafe in Hawthorn. Whip Lash keep it simple, suppling the locals with a brief but oh-my-goodness delicious cafe menu.
Nothing can compare to a great Thai meal. Imm Son Thai in Lilydale has to be one of the east’s BEST. This local restaurant is only open for dinner and it is always a popular spot for diners and takeaway orders.
What a beautiful little cafe hidden in the suburban streets of Vermont. Leeroy (our you may recall it as the The Vermont General Store) is a real gem. Beautiful brunches and lunches are on offer here in this light and airy, old milk bar.
Hard Road Brewing in Bayswater is a local brewery with a kids play area. With over 20 beers on tap, wine, spirits and a kids play area it's great. They serve up pizzas and often have food trucks out the front as well as live music events.
Pastry Chef Garon has opened up Croissant Bar in Heathmont, serving up delicious sourdough croissants, crumplings, cronuts and more. With sweet and savoury options there is something for everyone.

The Public Brewery is NOW Dainton Taphouse. The craft brewery is originally from Carrum Downs but has now spread its wings to the Eastside and brewing up a storm in the burbs of Croydon.

Hola Mamma’s! If you’re looking to spice things up in the brunch department, then look no further. Maria Cafe is a fresh mexican inspired cafe in the hills and it’s got all the locals of Upwey talking. And Mamma knows why! The food is simply delicious! Mamma had THE BEST Eggs Benedict of her life!
Fantastic Mister Fox has delicious food with funky menu names such as Hot in the Hen House, one of Mamma’s faves, and He’s Home for the Hollondaise which is always a crowd pleaser.
Nestled in the tiny little town of Millgrove along the Warubrton Trail is Cookie Grove. The Ice Creamery sources all local ingredients from the Yarra Valley and is dishing out some sweet stuff. Mamma definitely recommends the Caramel Slice Ice Cream- YES it really does taste like it.
The shop in Bayswater is open 7 days and is serving up pastries, pies, breads, bagels, toasties and sandwiches. There are your classic sourdoughs and croissants - but when your are Dröm town … you are best to try one of the signature pieces - Salted Caramel Half Moon, the Hazelnut & Chocolate Crescent OR a Mixed Berry & Custard Half Moon.

Little brunch dates with a little mate are so so sweet … especially when they want the WAFFLES! Mackie Mulgrave is a gorgeous cafe. Perfect for those coffee dates, catch ups after the school drop off or family breakfasts.
Mamma just LOVES The Trail Cafe! With kids play areas both inside and out as well as delicious food, what’s not to love?
This tiny little bar is what dreams are made of! Featuring an entire wall with every flavour of cordial from the famous Billson’s Brewery - you can order cordials, sodas, milkshakes and even spiders at this Soda Bar in Beechworth.
This cordial factory is super impressive. Established in 1865, the brewery is one of Australia’s oldest and has recently been lovingly restored and revitalised into this thriving tourist destination - and top notch beverage producers. Drop in for a meal, a tour, buy your sodas OR taste the entire range of traditional cordials at the tasting bar.
Cooperccino’s is a coffee van set up next to Summerhill Park Reserve in Mooroolbark. Now not only are they serving up delicious coffee, toasties and sweets but they have set up a cool area on the lawn with shade, tables and chairs and the best bit……kids ride on cars. A cafe next to a playground is the best.
Red Gum Cafe in Templestowe is an excellent spot for a mamma catch up. With both indoor and outdoor play areas for the little ones, you can enjoy your coffee and lunch. Outside is a sandpit, slide, swing, jeep and music wall, inside is dolls, books, trains, imaginary play and loads of table space and high chairs.
Mamma has got stars in her eyes for this place! The Star Hotel is THE place to be in the sweetest of all towns - Yackandandah. The American style BBQ menu is delicious and full of flavour.
You can’t really say you have done Beechworth until you have been to Beechworth Bakery. This place has been an institution since 1984 and you just HAVE to try a pastry, or a pie, a snot block, a bee sting AND a meringue.
If you want to learn about any small Australian town - head to the local watering hole. In Stanley, the entire heart of this tiny village is the Stanley Pub. This establishment which was first opened in 1854, has had a resurgence in recent years under the guidance of new ownership and it has made its mark with the locals as well the visitors to Victoria’s High Country.

Oh my oh my Mamma has found the most amazing bakery! Quarry Bakehouse in Upper Ferntree Gully is filled with breads, pastries, cakes and pies - all Mamma’s favourites.
