bike adventures for families in Melbourne's east
/ Mamma ErinMamma and the fam love a bike adventure - from when the kiddos were just learning on their wobbly training wheels at the park, to discovering new places along the many trails we have around the east. Nothing beats the feeling of freedom and adventure you get when you’re on a bike! Mamma has gathered some of her favourite bike adventures for you to discover.
This is the perfect spot for all sorts of outdoor activities- a HUGE grassed area for kicking the footy or for a family picnic plus a bike/walking track
Wesburn Recreational Reserve has had an upgrade and this pump track is one of Mamma’s favourites.
Ever since the 80’s Mamma dreamed of being a BMX Bandit. Unfortunately the dream never came true but it just might for her little ones.
What a beautiful little spot of nature Mamma has discovered in the suburbs. Koolamara Waters is just perfect for little adventurers.
The Warby Trail has to me Mamma’s MOST favourite place to relax and chill out with the dogs.
BMX buddies - let’s cheer for the new Coldstream Pump Track. This spot opened late in 2022 and had been a hit with the locals. You can ride or scoot or even skate (oh i’d love to see that) on the purpose built, asphalted track which has bumps and turns and jumps and corners.
Nothing beats fresh air and sunshine so what better way to start your day than a walk around the Liverpool Road Retarding Basin. With the Dandenong Ranges as a backdrop it is simply stunning.
Any Mamma’s in need of spending some time with the ultimate Mamma - Mother Nature? Head to Lakewood Nature Reserve for a little bit of bushland in the middle of the suburbs.
Emerald Lake is a real GEM - and now you can hire a bike to explore all of its beauty!
In this family we love going on an adventure, and the Dandenong Creek Trail is a wonderful place to explore.
When riding with kids, there is some key criteria that we look for. Flat paths, far enough away from the road, places to stop along the way and some fun things to see. Olinda Creek Trail ticks lots of these boxes for us!
Grab the bikes and lets go for a ride through Boroondara.
Wilson Reserve in Ivanhoe provides a great vantage point, as well as being a nice family friendly walk or bike ride in the bush.
As soon as your kids show an interest in bikes or scooters get them booked in for a session at the famous institution that is the Kew Traffic School.
Tucked in the hills of Belgrave Heights, this nature reserve and trail that weaves around the Monbulk Creek and retarding basin and is yet ANOTHER slice of eastie paradise.
The Heatherdale pump track is a dual bike zone. One for BMX and the other for mountain bikes.
We might not have the beach or the bay … but the east sure has The Lake! Lillydale Lake (yep … it has the old spelling still) is an eastie classic.
127 hectares of parkland in the middle of Wheelers Hill this is a picnicker's dream.
This little trail fits a very specific criteria - a bike trail that is great for beginners, not too long and can cope with a scooter!
We love a great rail to explore! Even better when it is nice and flat and has a lovely view to take in.
The simple silhouette from artist Matt Cavert, always makes me think of the innocence of childhood and the countless wonderings our little ones have about the world. Mamma also was certain that one day, we would take the family and recreate his pose, gazing up into the never ending blue sky!
Mamma and the crew love a Sunday stroll. Even better when there is somewhere that the dogs can have a great walk, enjoy some beautiful views, have some wildlife spotting and a playground at the end. Westerfolds Park is this spot.
This park is sure to be a hit with both a skatepark and BMX track.
Pump Tracks seem to be the newest trend in the bike world and are popping up all over the East!
A classic mix of equipment will keep the kids moving like the slides, birds nest swing, spinners and crawling net. But it is the little touches will make a Mamma smile. From the wood carvings on the logs, the door-knob handles for eyes on the rocks, the tea party for 5 set up closer to the oval and the nature play that will develop over time, there is lots to like at this little play space.
Wesburn Park has the MOST incredible views of the mountains and has a GREAT little playground to match. This little pocket of space, at the back of the ovals and close to the toilets, has a nice fresh playground of red, yellow and orange.
The wait is over - the fully fenced, Stud Park Playground has opened. This farm themed playground is designed to be an all abilities play space, catering for children in a range of different ways.
Multiple swings, a bike path and water play, this playground in Drouin has everything to keep Mamma’s 2 year old happy. Bring along your little one’s bike or scooter to ride the path around the playground and stop to refuel.
Mamma just LOVES a good playground/trail combo and Damper Creek Conservation Reserve has just that. A really fun playground, in an 11 hectare bushland reserve with walking tracks.
Time to HOP on over like a frog to the wetlands and explore this playground, who knows you may even come across a frog or two. This playground has many of our favourites in Officer. From swings to slides and a spot to climb.
Elizabeth Bridge Reserve is a great space for all, fabulous to explore the sealed pathways on bike or scooter with the little ones and if there’s still some energy after all the exploring, head to the new exercise equipment area for a workout.
It’s been a long time in the making but it is HERE … the NEW Victoria Park in Kew is OPEN and the Boroondara locals have already given it a massive thumbs up!
McAlpine Park is a beautiful spot to spend the afternoon with the family for a play in the playground, waddle around with the ducks and cut laps on the bikes and scooters. This reserve is immaculately kept with stunning gardens, and is filled with sprawling lawns for ball games and picnics and a BRAND NEW PLAYGROUND
We love this parkland for the trails, views of the Yarra (where the name Birrarrung comes from) and then a little play at the park.
This park has heaps on offer with bike tacks, heaps of equipment and space to RUN!
We present to you - the rainbow playground! You really can’t go past a playspace that has pretty much EVERYTHING.
This great community space is huge! Heaps of different sections for a range of age groups and abilities - but most importantly - a TRAIN!
A great little street playground with its own scooter track!
The wait is over. Diamond Creek Regional Playspace is OPEN
This fresh playground is found in Gardinders Creek Reserve. Set next to the off-leash dog area, this playground is a great area for toddler and preschooler play. There is plenty to bounce, spin and climb on - the kind of park to go to when you need to get some fresh air and get out of the house.
Calling all wannabe ninja warriors. Mamma had the crew have an outdoor junior (AND senior course) for YOU! Tucked in to the Berwick Springs wetlands you will find a recreation reserve with all the necessary training equipment to inspire your little daredevils.
The playground that runs along the boundary of the footy oval has a single climbing structure with monkey-bar rings, a slide and, as always, the tan-bark cafe underneath. However, the highlights for this little guy are a tie between the sandpit - complete with building table and tools - and the spinning double swing.
Next time you are heading to the Train Park, ensure you pack the bikes and the scooters!
Mamma LOVED this classic community playground before the upgrade, but now it is EVEN BETTER! The Cardinia Community Playground is based on a classic wooden framed play space with heaps of twists and turns and things to climb over.
Ladies and Gents, start your engines. Pop on a helmet. Ding those bells. GET READY TO RACE! There is a BRAND NEW Grand Prix themed playground and it is just made for riding.
The old faithful playground where you know everyone will have a good time.
There is a new, AMAZING and safe place at Queens Park in Healesville to take the bikes, scooters and trikes and let the kids do laps.
