national communication museum, hawthorn
/Oh bless Mamma’s nostalgic, elder-millennial heart. The National Communication Museum is like taking a stroll down memory lane and we can’t get enough of it!
The National Communication Museum is a brand new space - well, within an old Telstra exchange building - that is dedicated to preserving and showcasing all the ways we have communicated with others over the years.
It is part art gallery, part interactive experience, including a fantastic hands on room designed specifically for the juniors. Here we learned about reading braille, pixel images, long distance communication and had a play in an old school phone box. There are plenty of things to spin, test and tinker with here.
Beyond the kids area, there is still heaps of hands on experiences. For example, you’ll learn the history of George - the talking clock that you called to give you the exact time via telephone. You can practice connecting a call with an old wired telephone exchange. Sit down at an ‘old school’ cyber cafe. Or even type out a cheerful message via morse code.
Mamma’s kids were smitten with using the connected rotary phones to call one another from one side of the room to the other. Although the concept of hanging up a phone and waiting for it to connect appeared to be a foreign idea!
The museum is two levels, connected with stairs and a lift, with the bottom area for temporary exhibits. Currently, it is all about surveillance and how monitoring technology is being used. We loved the camera that was reading our feelings - or at least what emotions we were pretending to show.
This was a fantastic indoor adventure, ticking the boxes for the entire family. We spent close to 2 hours exploring. The kids learnt lots too - like the amount of cables that are underground keeping us connected, or how they could interact with AI - and Mamma, loved spotting all the objects of her childhood behind glass cabinetry.
