lake catani, mt buffalo

Mamma has found it - picnic perfection! On the plateau of Mount Buffalo, the still cool waters of Lake Catani stretches out, inviting you to jump on the kayak, paddle at the shore and bask by the bank.

Picnicking is serious business at Mount Buffalo, and Lake Catani delivers in spades. There is a new undercover BBQ shed, plenty of picnic tables dotted around the bank, a small jetty with steps and a gentle slope into the freshwater - perfect for littlies to splash about in. It is utterly picturesque, enveloped in snow gum woodlands.

Explore the surroundings further by taking one of the bushwalks branching off the lake. Families with big kids will be able to walk or cycle the 4km track that links the lake to the spectacular view at The Gorge.

This is an easy day trip from Porepunkah or Bright, and well worth it.
Or, there is a campground here if you wish to linger longer - and Mamma definitely plans to pitch a tent here one summer! This spot is quieter than the popular swimming spot further from the summit, Ladies Bath and Eurobin Falls. (link: )

Mamma’s special mention: A further 9km along the road, you will find The Horn, a 360° lookout over the extensive and vast mountain ranges of the Australian Alps. Be mindful that the gravel road up there has seasonal closures from Dingo Dell.
