masons falls, kinglake national park, kinglake west

Would you believe that these beautiful falls can be found just outside of Kinglake? Mason Falls is a real treasure and make a great family excursion out into the great outdoors. The 600m trail, which leads to the left from the picnic ground, is kid friendly, with gentle slopes (a little huffy puffy on the way back), has some bridge crossings through the forest, and takes you to a wonderful vantage point to view the cascading water. You might even spot some wildlife if the sounds of the water aren’t too loud!

You can also head to the right, for the Lyrebird loop track (500m and an easy walk) which will lead you amongst the most beautiful ferns and has access right up to Running Creek. If the water is flowing, grab a leaf and race it down the channel! Best time to visit is after some rain. Our most recent visit in December meant the water levels were quite low but still a nice walk through the forest.
