dream room by beci orpin @ yarra ranges regional museum, lilydale
/Welcome to dream room. A brand new exhibition at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in Lilydale. Artist Beci Orpin has developed this gallery space into an oversized bedroom, immediately transporting you back in time into the childhood bedroom of your youth.
This is an interactive art exhibition where the adults are reminded of their early days and the kids - they still get to be kids.
The huge cubby in the centre of the space features a giant dining room chair, draped with a sheet, just like those forts you make on school holidays! The shelves are filled with all the ‘treasures’ kids collect and fiercely protect in corners of the room - like the tiny scraps of paper, the very important special rock or every parent’s nightmare… the apple core. The shelves are chaotic and oh so very familiar.
In other corners you’ll find a beautiful night light, a pin board for making shapes with rubber bands and a giant mural of kids art work. Visitors are welcome to add to the wall with their own creations, as well as take items from the bottom shelf to explore with as they wish whilst in the dream room.
The other feature - and it’s certainly hard to miss - is Big Ted. This teddy fills an entire corner, and like every well loved soft toy, he loves cuddles (just not to be climbed on).
