a toast to melba @ yarra ranges regional museum, lilydale
/She’s our gal - the lady on the hundred dollar notes - and a certified eastie! Not only does the east link tunnel, the highway up to Yea AND the playground in Lilydale all bear her name, Dame Nelle Melba was it-and-a-bit back in the day.
Yarra Ranges Regional Museum’s most recent exhibit is all about tipping our hats to Australia’s most significant operatic soprano. A Toast to Melba is a reflection of the influence and impression this lady made not only to Australia but also the world. The room on the ground floor displays some truly treasured items from performances, costumes and photographs. Kids loved spotting the jewelled dagger from Romeo and Juliet and some sparkly shoes … but Mamma only had eyes for the Louis Vuitton luggage!
Legend has it she was a lady before her time, a true lover of art and absolutely loved to host a party, including spoiling the grandkids at Coombe Estate. With this in mind, the upstairs gallery has been transformed into Melba’s Vintage Playroom. The kids are invited (with adult supervision) to step back in time and enjoy the vintage delights of dress ups, hula hoops, wooden trains and a puppet show. A great hands on experience to match up with a visit to the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum.
