barton milk bar, hawthorn
/What once used to be an old milk bar on the corner of Barton and Denham Streets in Hawthorn is now a spectacular cafe and a local neighbourhood gem! Barton Milk Bar still looks the same on the outside, but on the inside it has been converted into a cosy cafe with a European vibe. They’ve kept the milk bar theme going also, with a shelf filled with lollies and newspapers that the kids will love!
On the menu there are classics including smashed avocado with feta, mint, and a poached egg, a Reuben sandwich and a super delicious Barton toastie with pesto chicken, avocado and beetroot relish (Mamma’s favourite). The kids menu features a mini cheeseburger and fries, boiled egg and soldiers, milkshakes and the best crinkle cut chips!
Their daily selection of cakes and biscuits are to die for, and keep an eye out on the weekends for their jam donuts, which sell out in a flash. Best of all, they recently got a liquor license, so you can enjoy a glass of red in winter by the open fireplace, or an Aperol spritz outside in summer under one of their street tables with umbrellas.
Mamma's special mention: Barton has a very popular takeaway window, so you can easily grab takeaway coffees and babycinos, and head to one of the local playgrounds, St James Park or Fashoda Street Reserve.
